What OSHA standards apply to me in the healthcare industry?

Posted by:

There are a few standards that traditionally apply to the healthcare industry. The main three standards are Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP), Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and Hazard Communication (HAZCOM).

Any employer with employees that have an occupational exposure to blood, must comply with the BBP regulatory requirements. This includes items such as annual BBP training for all affected staff, development/maintenance of a BBP Exposure Control Plan, offering the Hepatitis B vaccination series, evaluating engineering controls, and maintaining a sharps injury log. This is not an exhaustive list by any means but it is a good start to identifying if your business may have some gaps.

In regards to Personal Protective Equipment, most likely employees are required to wear gloves, goggles/face shields, aprons, etc… This means that you must have completed an evaluation of the workplace to determine tasks that require the use of PPE. Finally, HAZCOM applies to any chemicals in the workplace that employees may have exposure to. This includes medicines, cleaning chemicals, and any other chemical in the workplace. You must develop a HAZCOM program which includes developing a chemical inventory list, maintaining and updating all Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), and providing training to employees on the chemicals to which they are exposed.

For example, as ironic as it may sound, chemotherapy drugs can cause cancer if employees are exposed, so it is important to protect employees to avoid these work related injuries and illnesses.

I hope that this brief overview was not too overwhelming. This is a shortened list of requirements as the law is very long and complex for all three standards. You may also have exposures such as ionizing radiation which need to be addressed.
